One smash song doesn’t always a lasting music career make, and nobody knows that better than the dozens of artists of the 1970’s and 1980’s now labeled as “one-hit wonders.” But here at Great Pop Culture Debate, we don’t consider that term disparaging. Having one hit song is a hell of a lot better than MOST music artists achieve, and we want to celebrate these temporary sensations who managed to capture musical magic for one brief moment in time. So join us the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast attempts to name the BEST one-hit wonder of the 1970’s & 1980’s — and we need YOUR opinions!

Below find a list of nearly 150 singles from those two decades (you can also find the poll here), whose artists have been deemed one-hit wonders. For our purposes, that means that the artists in question — even if they had subsequent or even previous singles — never again recaptured the success of the song with which they are most associated.

Note that for this episode of the podcast, we are strictly focused on one one-hit wonders from the 70s and 80s. The 90s and 00s will get their due in a future episode of the podcast!

The entries below are randomized to prevent placement bias. If you’re looking for a particular song/artist, hit Ctrl +F and search by name.

Did we miss your favorite? Add it to the list! Then send this poll to your music-loving friends and have them chime in with their favorites.

The 32 top vote-getters will be discussed on Season 3 of the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast, debuting in March 2021. Check out our Episodes page to see which topics we’ve already covered!
