RECAP: ‘Great British Baking Show’ Season 17, Episode 1
Dust the flour off your aprons and pull up a chair, because our beloved white tent is officially back, baby!
First, let’s get the absolute most important thing out of the way:
MEEK-RO-WAH-VAY.
Ok, that’s the only one I’ll do. I am over the moon that the icon, the legend, the domestic goddess herself, Nigella Lawson, has joined the tent family! I am so ready to watch her particular brand of sensual, delightfully zany chaos spice up the “Great British Bake-Off” dynamic.
Now, let’s get this cake a-bakin’!
Read on for my take on the first episode of “Great British Bake-Off” (AKA “Great British Baking Show” for us American swine) Season 17. SPOILERS AHEAD!

The Signature: Sumptuous Stout & Sudden Tragedy
For their very first challenge, our new bakers were tasked with delivering a sumptuous chocolate stout cake.
Sumptuous.
Shall we dive into some quick first impressions of our fresh batch of victims…er, contestants?
Shannon: Seems to have taken literal human-sized bites straight out of the butter block intended for her sour cherry stout cake.
Tom: This season’s resident skinny gay and a hairstylist, who I am 100% convinced either does drag on the weekends or is secretly a lesbian.
Gary: Our designated "old straight man" of the year, who boldly adds mayonnaise to his cake mix. Groundbreaking.
Yannis: An Austrian baby doctor who immediately claims high-class territory by opting for a traditional Sachertorte.
Clara: Her single defining personality trait is that she’s Portuguese, and we definitely won’t get sick of hearing it before the hour is up.
Moyin: Has stunning legs and, if you catch him in profile, looks remarkably like RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty A’keria C. Davenport. Hopefully his run on the season isn’t as cursed.
Danni: Looks like she was yanked directly off a 1600s turnip farm. Indeedaroonie!
Nikki: Seems like an absolute riot and pairs her stout with a bright blackberry compote.
Connie: Embracing the "Nan of the Season" trope full force by baking a truly hideous mango cake I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot offset spatula.
Molly: The first full-time wheelchair user in the tent! She sounds like a fairy, which makes her immediate, soul-crushing tragedy hurt even worse: In true “Bake-Off” fashion, her perfectly baked bundt cake took a tragic dive straight onto the floor.
Mo: The baby of the season. Someone please tell this young man he needs to unclench his jaw and actually open his mouth when he speaks.
Gabe: ACTUALLY a drag queen! And part of a thriving throuple! C’MON, QUEER REPRESENTATION!
(As a quick aside: Why does Nigella already sound three proseccos deep? Not a complaint, just an observation.)
After Molly’s floor-cake disaster, Clara quickly followed up with her own structural nightmare: a crushed sugar dome, of which she inexplicably only made enough ingredients to build one. As my personal favorite [sarcasm] pastime on this show dictates, we heard multiple bakers utter the cursed phrase: "Well, this didn't fail at home!" Ah yes, the magic of the tent humidity strikes again.
The Signature Verdict:
A sea of remarkably ugly cakes. Tom, Mo, and Moyin excelled early, while Gary’s Mayonn-ake somehow netted top marks from Paul. Meanwhile, Danni’s raw cake-aroony and Gabe’s basic-bitch sponge landed them squarely in the danger zone. Bonus points to Molly for sheer resilience and actually putting a backup cake on the judging table after leaving the first draught on the grass (Get it? Cause it’s a stout cake? Eh!?)
The Technical: Blind Faith & Tan Lines
The Technical brought a downright cruel new twist to the first week: No recipe. The bakers had to work solely from a stylized illustration to create a classic coffee and walnut cake.
"No. 1 aim is not dropping any cake on the floor."
— Molly, setting the bar at a realistic height.
Without ingredient ratios, everyone took wild guesses at walnut counts, espresso shots, and salt levels. The editors had a field day cross-cutting bakers doing the exact opposite of what Paul and Nigella were looking for.
The absolute highlight of the round, however, was Nigella’s savage read comparing Paul Hollywood’s aggressively dark fake tan to a well-baked walnut cake.
The Technical Rankings:
At the bottom,
12th Place (Vying for the Porkchop Queen title): Molly
11th Place: Danni
And at the top,
Gabe (3rd), Gary (2nd), and taking 1st place—our resident Princess Diana impersonator, Tom!
The Showstopper: Self-Portraits, Sabotage & Unspeakable Horror
Reaching the final round, Nigella declared she was “full of cake and hope.” We love a relatable icon. The challenge? Create an edible self-portrait cake in four high-stress hours.
Things descended into madness almost immediately:
The Dialogue: Who on earth had Alison refer to old man Gary’s citrus bake as a "lemon party" on national television?! Furthermore, my jaw hit the floor when I could have sworn Paul asked Molly why she "SITS” instead of “SIFTS.” (Thankfully, he said sifts. My heart almost stopped.)
The Disasters: Yannis (inexplicably a medical professional!) forgot to add the meringue to his meringue cake; Moyin literally forgot to turn his oven on. Meanwhile, Danni attempted to poison the judges with a cake with what she called bog water and plants dredged from the forest floor. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage: Sticky Willy!
The Make-A-Wish Moment: Noel and Alison kindly let Danni do the halfway time call. A lovely gesture to let her feel included before she gets the chop.
The Elephant in the Room: Connie’s self-portrait didn't feature Connie at all. It featured a massive, gray elephant. Okay then!
Then came a MAJOR TURN OF EVENTS.
With almost zero context or explanation, Shannon simply walked out of the tent with a paramedic, throwing herself directly onto the sword that was hanging over Danni’s head.
With the clock ticking down, panic set in. Moyin’s modeling-chocolate head began to melt like a horror movie prop, Yannis was an hour behind on his pointillism icing, and Danni’s bog-witch nightmare looked like it was dredged from the bottom of the Loch Ness. The bakers were escorted out for tea, leaving just enough time for Danni’s cake to slowly slump onto the floor like a sad, melting goblin.
The Showstopper Judging:
Danni: Paul’s best compliment was, "Well... you gave us a cake."
Gary: A snooze.
Tom: A “Simpsons”-inspired masterpiece that tasted as incredible as it looked.
Moyin: A gruesome, bleeding chocolate head. Overbaked, but delicious.
Yannis: The painting was more successful than I expected, but unfortunately dry.
Gabe: A stunning homage to his drag persona, slightly let down by dry sponge.
Nikki: a terror to behold, and looked very stodgy inside.
Clara: a pistachio cardamom cake lacking cardamom.
Connie: Hideous elephant, surprisingly tasty.
Molly: A delicate, stunning sugar-knitting scene atop a light, tart cake that single-handedly saved her from elimination.
Mo: A visually phenomenal portrait. His deadpan, unbothered Gen-Z energy makes me irrationally annoyed, but the kid can bake. Wake up, Pearl!
The Final Verdict
Despite Danni basically accepting her fate and waiting for the executioner's blade, the judges had a choice to make.
In the running for Star Baker were Tom, Gary, and Mo, with Mo clinching the first Star Baker of the season! He looked... absolutely thrilled. (Read: completely expressionless).
And as for who went home? NO ONE!
Thanks to Shannon’s mid-bake departure, the judges gave everyone a second chance, setting us up for a likely brutal double-elimination next week.
Will Molly manage to keep her bakes off the carpet? Will Mo finally part his lips to speak? Will Danni bring more detritus with which to bake? Join us next week to find out!
