The 1980s were an amazing decade to be a kid, and a big part of that were the amazing, fantastical, iconic, and often — in hindsight — deeply traumatizing children’s films put out during the decade. Today’s kids will never know! But we can talk about how those foundational film moments turned into the completely normal and well-adjusted adults we are now! The Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine the best 1980s children’s film of all time, and we want YOUR opinions!
Below find a list of 100 or so notable children’s films of the 1980s. (You can also take the poll by clicking here.) Many of these were directly marketed to children, some were more broad fantasy epics that intrigued and beguiled kids (and scarred us — get out of the Swamps of Sadness, Artax! You can do it!). Select your favorites from the list below. Pick as many as you like! The order is generated at random, so if there’s a specific film you want to find, do Ctrl+F to search by name.
Did we miss your favorite? Add it to the field below and we may discuss it in the episode. Then send to your friends so they can put forward their 80s flick picks. The more answers, the better the bracket!
The poll will run until Friday, June 17. Make sure to submit your answers by then!
The 32 top vote-getters will be discussed in a Season 6 episode of the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast, debuting in fall 2022. Find out more at greatpopculturedebate.com.
