Since the TARDIS first appeared on telly screens via the BBC on November 23, 1963, The Doctor has had dozens of Companions — typically ordinary humans who join the time-traveling alien on wild, wacky, wonderful, and sometimes scary adventures. With “Doctor Who” poised to celebrate its 60th anniversary this fall, and the show about to get a massive revamp courtesy of returning showrunner Russell T. Davis, returning Doctor David Tennant, and NEW Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, there’s no better time — or space — for the Great Pop Culture Debate to determine the Best “Doctor Who” Companion — and we need your help to do it!
Below find a list of all 50+ regular Companions that have joined The Doctor over the course of the “Doctor Who” television series. (If you’re taking it on a mobile device, we strongly encourage you to click this link instead.) We included Classic Who and Reboot Who. We did NOT include Companions from the audio adventures or other media. This is strictly looking at the television Companions, and specifically characters who have been canonically identified by the showrunners as Companions.
Pick as many of the Companions as you like. Did we miss your favorite? Add them in the space below! Then send to your friends and fellow Whovians so they can take the poll. The more votes we have the better balanced the debate will be! Allons-y!
The poll will run until June 30, 2023. Make sure to submit your answer by then!
The 16 top vote-getters will be discussed in Season 8 of the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast, debuting in Fall 2023. Find out more at greatpopculturedebate.com.
