Some of the most iconic stars in music history didn’t start out as solo acts. They emerged from already-successful bands, and in some cases went on to solo careers that dwarfed the careers of the bands that spawned them. Now, as part of Season 8, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to look back at those supernova stars who exploded out of bands, and we need YOUR opinions!
Below find a list of just about every major recording artist who came from a band. (If you’re taking this on a mobile device, we suggest clicking this link for ease of use.) We focused primarily on artists with significant success in America, and limited it to artists who came from bands that ALSO had at least some level of national success prior to the solo artists emerging from it. Pick your favorite artists from the list — choose as many as you like. Your votes help determine which artists the panel will discuss in the episode.
Did we miss your favorite? Add it to the space below and we’ll try to add them to the poll! Then send the poll to your friends and have them chime in with their favorites. The more votes we have, the better balanced the bracket will be!
The poll will run until Friday, July 14, 2023. Make sure to submit your answer by then!
The 32 top vote-getters will be discussed on Season 8 of the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast, debuting in fall 2023. Find out more at greatpopculturedebate.com.
