There’s barely a weekend that goes by when movie theaters aren’t dominated by a new super-hero film. Since the early 2000s they’ve become box-office sensations that have generated billions, spawned innumerable sequels and related projects, and delighted millions more fans than the comic-book source material ever reached. But even before the days of cinematic universes, super heroes made it to the big screen, sometimes with still-legendary results. So now, for Season 8, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to look back at films both past and present to determine the Best Super-Hero Film of all time. And we want YOUR opinions!
Below find a list of just about every major super-hero film we could think of. (If you’re taking on a mobile device, we recommend clicking here for ease of use.) For our purposes, super-heroes had to have some kind of super powers or be masked vigilantes working outside the law. While many of these are adaptations of comic-book properties, some are original to the theater. And we stuck almost entirely to American films for this debate, with a focus on films that had a theatrical release window in the United States.
Pick your favorite films from the bunch — select as many as you like. Did we miss your favorite super-hero-film? Add it to the poll in the space below! Then send along to your friends and have them chime in with their favorite super-hero picks. The more votes we have, the better balanced the bracket
The poll will run until July 20. Make sure to submit your answer by then!
The 32 top vote-getters will be discussed on Season 8 of the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast, debuting in fall 2023. Find out more at greatpopculturedebate.com.
